According to the Airports Security Force Act LXXVII of 1975, the ASF was initially created in 1976 as the Directorate of the Department of Civil Aviation. The Airports Security Force (ASF) was separated following the hijacking of a Pakistan International Airlines plane in March 1981 due to the conflicting demands of security and convenience. In December 1983, the ASF was incorporated into the Ministry of Defence.
